Tiger Radio WLSC is bringing back the "Boss Jock" sound. Legendary radio personality M.G. "Machine Gun" Kelly can be heard Tuesdays 6-10 pm on AM 1240 WLSC and around the world at TigerRadio.com. The popular radio show, "Back to the 70s" hosted by Kelly debuted on Tuesday September 13, 2011.

Kelly may be best known for his days at 93 KHJ in Los Angeles. Machine Gun also worked in Oklahoma City, Cleveland and Minneapolis. While in LA, he also appeared in several movies including "A Star is Born" with Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Streisand, "The Enforcer" with Clint Eastwood and "The Buddy Holly Story". M.G. has also appeared in countless tv programs such as Happy Days, M*A*S*H, Knots Landing, CHIPs, Hill Street Blues and WKRP in Cincinnati. Kelly even served as the announcer on Wheel of Fortune.

The Gunner was named Billboard Magazine's "Radio Personality of the Year" in 1978. In 1998, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and his work is also in the Museum of Television and Radio.

Kelly's production company is responsible for several successful radio programs including "Back to the 70s".

The SEC Championship is on WLSC Tiger Radio

WLSC Tiger Radio is pleased to announce that the SEC football championship will be broadcast on AM 1240 WLSC. The game is scheduled for December 3rd.

Coverage of the SEC begins with a 3 part series entitled, The SEC Preview Show. Every school in the SEC will be featured in the broadcasts.

From September to March, Tiger Radio will air the weekly SEC Report. WLSC Tiger Radio also plans to air the SEC men's baketball sem-finals and finals.

Clemson Tigers are Coming to WLSC Tiger Radio

Announcement made today in Virtual News Conference

Loris, SC - Thursday June 9, 2011 - It's official. The Clemson Tigers are coming to WLSC Tiger Radio. Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC, which owns WLSC Tiger Radio (AM 1240) has struck a deal with Learfield Sports, parent company of The Clemson Tigers Sports Network.

By finalizing this agreement, Tiger Radio WLSC will be broadcasting Clemson Tigers Football starting this fall. Tiger Radio WLSC will also air men's basketball and baseball in 2011 and 2012. Starting in September, Clemson fans will also be able to tune in to AM 1240 to hear The Clemson Daily Show and the weekly Coaches Show.

Banana Jack Murphy made the announcement today in a "Virtual News Conference" which featured a live video webcast around the world on TigerRadio.com and MyTigerTV.com and an audio simulcast on WLSC AM 1240.

"The Clemson Tigers on Tiger Radio just makes sense. This is a win-win situation for Clemson fans, our listeners and our growing family of advertisers....even my son is excited", says station manager Banana Jack Murphy.

During the "Virtual News Conference", a video segment was featured starring Tommy, The Tiger Radio mascot and Murphy's son, Tristan. In a pitch to potential advertisers, Tristan closes the deal by saying, "We ain't selling cereal, we're selling football!"

The Clemson Tigers kickoff the 2011 football season on September 3rd at Memorial Stadium in a matchup with Troy.

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "He's got a face for radio." I hope that doesn't apply to me, but ugly is in tghe eye of the beholder. Who knows? Tune into the radio and see for yourself.

What we've unveiled at WLSC Tiger Radio is nothing new. I've watched countless broadcasts of Don Imus and Mike & Mike on television. Howard Stern has had cameras in the studio. So has Bob & Tom, Kidd Kraddick and others. We're just one of the first to do it in the Carolinas.

Honestly, it does feel a little different with cameras on in the studio. It's not freaking me out, but there's an uneasiness. I can't explain it. It's just new ground for me to cover.

As many of you know, I've hosted a dailv tv show, River Talk since 1997. I've also been involved in several television projects since breaking into broadcasting in 1982. Oddly enough, I feel like I'm letting you in on some big secret.

Tiger Radio WLSC Celebrates 72nd Anniversary of War of the Worlds Broadcast

Loris, SC, October 28, 2008 - On Saturday, October 30th at 6:00 PM, WLSC AM 1240 & TigerRadio.com invite you to dim the lights and turn up your radio or computer speakers. Gather your family and relive one of the most spectacular radio moments during the Twentieth Century. "If you're not careful, your imagination could get the best of you.", says station owner, Banana Jack Murphy. " Tiger Radio is going to rebroadcast one of the most well known radio events on the day it happened. How cool is that?", adds Murphy, a 28 year broadcast veteran. War of the Worlds was first broadcast on October 30, 1938. The radio drama was written and produced by The Mercury Theatre on the Air. Orson Welles and his co-writer Howard Koch are credited with creating a radio drama that scared a nation.

How did Welles and his colleagues rattle an entire country? "Perhaps, it was the style of the program.", says Murphy. The drama starts off as a regular music broadcast. As listeners were tuning in for orchestra music, the radio program was interrupted by late breaking news reports of alien attacks from real name locations. Banana Jack adds, "What these guys did is incredible. You have to remember this was 72 years ago. If I was around back then, it might have fooled me too." Since The Mercury Theatre ran without commercial breaks, the dramatic effect was intensified during the original 60 minute broadcast. The effect was also compounded by many folks who tuned in late. It's estimated that a majority of listeners did just that and thus missed Orson Welles' introduction which explained that what was to follow was merely a dramatization. "Don't tune in late or you might get tricked too.”, says Banana Jack.

Tiger Radio WLSC AM 1240 and TigerRadio.com are proud to present without commercial interruption, the original Mercury Theatre presentation on Saturday, October 30, 2010 starting at 6:00 PM, which happens to be seventy two years to the day that our nation was gripped by fear. The Mighty Tiger Drive-In

Some of my happiest moments as a child were spent at drive-in theaters with my family. Mmmm, the aroma of fresh popcorn and hotdogs filled the air in those really large cars we rode in the 60s and 70s.

In the summer, my dad would put those ridiculous mosquito coils on the dash of his American-made automobile so the kids wouldn't get bit by skeeters. Does anyone remember those?

Yes, those were the days. I bet the memories are even sweeter for those of you who attended drive-in theaters during the 50s. It was just a more simpler time.

Now, I've recreated the drive-in experience on our website (www.tigerradio.com). Now is when you're supposed to say, "You're kidding."

To be completely honest, I think the idea is more exciting that actually sitting in front of your computer and watching a movie, but I decided to do it anyway.

Simply, look for the drive-in theater logo on the homepage and click. Suddenly, you're transported to The Mighty Tiger Drive In Theater.

Classic Movies, Vintage TV Shows and Live Events - Coming Soon

I've dabbled with video on the internet for the last couple of years. I still remember getting excited over webcam images that rereshed every 15 seconds. Well, to quote the old cigarette ad, "You've come a long way, baby."

Wow. I've seen great video through both LiveStream and UStream. Currently, my colleagues at Q Rock Radio.com are using LiveStream. I decided to give UStream a shot. BINGO!

I was blown away by the quality and my cameras are not the best on the market. In fact, I'm operating on a shoestring budget, but it works. It works really well.

So, after testing several software products, I discovered that I could start broadcasting a lot more than just what was captured by my studio cameras.

This week, I've started broadcasting archived video from my personal collection. I have a ton of public domain movies and classic television shows from yesteryear.

The video is not perfect, but it's close. You can still enjoy our broadcasts without getting twisted out of synch over an occasional slight rebuffering.

So, tune in for the next few weeks. You'll see some really strange things happening on the website (www.tigerradio.com), but as I tell so many who keep asking me, "What are you doing?"

I can only reply, "Stay Tuned!"

WLSC Tiger Radio will be featuring classic movies, vintage tv shows and boy, I can't wait for those live events.

Today, we launched Tiger TV. Actually, we launched Tiger TV with archived video a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, having live streaming video is a nice addition to our website.

It's really cool having folks check out the video, but cameras in the studio are going to take some getting used too.

Although, this is a tremendous tool for marketing the station. Tiger Radio is poised to offer new promtional and marketing ideas for our existing and new advertisers.

In today's climate, you have to provide value for your sponsors. That's always been my stance, even when times were good.

For now, we're broadcasting my afternoon show every weekday afternoon. We're also broadcasting a traffic cam at the intersection of Main Street and Broad Street in downtown Loris. (That's one busy intersection.)

Coming soon to the WLSC website is live streaming video of our radio programming. I've been contemplating the addition of cameras in the studio for quite some time. Surprisingly, the large broadcast groups in the Myrtle Beach radio market have not implemented this technology.

Oh well, let's chalk up another one for the independent broadcaster. Lights. Cameras. Action. Tiger Radio is about to become Tiger TV! Yeah, radio with pictures.

Banana Jack in the Afternoon?????

Howdy!

For those of you wondering if I was having as much fun as it sounded this afternoon, I can honestly tell you....YES!!!!

Since I took over the day to day operations of WLSC, I've been the first one getting to the station in the morning and the last one leaving in the evening.

Juggling all the duties of general manager, program director and on air personality has made me weary. I learned the hard way that there's a tremendous difference between "busy" and "productive".

Having said that, I've learned how to work smarter.

Moving to afternoons is just another step in my new business plan. I will be making many more changes to the programming lineup at Tiger Radio WLSC in the next few weeks.

Sales and marketing are getting a makeover, too. As for the website, many of you have seen some of the changes and there will be more.

Today, I had a lot of fun just concentrating on the radio show and nothing else. It was the most fun that I'd had in a while.

I'm doing some new things, but many old favorites came along for the afternoon show including Leon Frazier, The World's Worst Elvis Impersonator and Harold Dean. Last week, I even spent a day in the studio recording 4 new song parodies.

27 Years and Counting

Every April Fools' Day, I'm reminded that way back in 1983, I was granted a broadcast license from the FCC.

Can you believe there once was a time when you had to take a test before you could be on the radio? Based on the current condition of radio, perhaps we should consider bringing back the test.

For me, I just mailed in a form and a few weeks later I was offically licensed to communicate on the airwaves. It was an exciting moment when I received my license with the seal of the Federal Communications Commission. For me, I'd dreamed of being a radio announcer since I was 7 years old.

Nonetheless, while I didn't have to take a test, I still learned the correct way to figure direct and indirect power. There once was a time when I could even figure out the antenna base current ratio.

Time have changed. Radio keeps evolving. So, do I.

Now as a station owner, I realize the last 27 years have been more exciting than I ever imagined. Of course, exciting would not be the adjective of choice to describe the past 2 years, but as I said, "I'm evolving!"

So on this April Fool's Day, I can't help but remember it was back in 1983 that someone at the FCC office in Washington, DC granted me a radio telephone operators license.

It was a day that changed my life, but the fact that it happened on April Fools' Day has always made me chuckle.

South Carolina Radio Station Celebrates Elvis' 75th Birthday

Loris, SC, January 7, 2009 - Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. He would be 75 tomorrow, (January 8) had he lived. Tiger Radio AM 1240 WLSC in Loris, SC will suspend normal programming to pay tribute to the undisputed "King of Rock & Roll" starting at midnight tonight.

"It's nothing but Elvis all day long.", says station manager, Banana Jack Murphy. Tiger Radio will be featuring all of Elvis' big hits as well as some of his more obscure recordings. What A Week It Has Been

Last Thursday, I was fortunate enough to be present when Q Rock Radio.com debuted. John Van Pelt fired things up on the microphone. There were television crews present and our local daily newspaper had already given us some great press online and in print, as well.

Freakin' Deacon was there. Doctor Bob Chase, too. Mixin' Dixon worked his magic. Bob Scarborough did his thing as well. Bill Hennecy, the man who inspired (...and SCARED) so many in radio, even made an appearance. Now, that I think about it, Hennecy scared a lot of folks outside of the radio game, too. I've got stories that I'll have to share some other day.

How about this? I even got do an hour on the first day of Q Rockin' from Broadway at the Beach. Although, I'm on the air Monday through Friday at my station, WLSC....something happened when I said, "Q Rock Radio!" I'm here to tell you that you could just feel the electricity in the air.

That first day on Q Rock only wet my appetite for more. I had obligations at my station last Friday, so I only got to hang out at Q Rock for about a half hour on day 2.

Saturday in the Sun Fun City. WOW! I read online that Johnny D. is in the studio. He's the guy that hired me back in 1989. He's the one responsible for bringing me to Myrtle Beach. I grabbed my 4 year old son, Tristan and drove as fast as I could to the studios at Broadway at the Beach.

When I got there Johnny had already departed. "Is he coming back?" "How did he look?" "Why was in such a hurry?" I was never that excited about Johnny when we worked together. He always scored more babes than I did. Now that we're both married with kids, things have changed.....a lot!

One of his old girlfriends did swing by. I had to tell her, "You just missed him." Ironic, huh? It was like the old days and I liked it.

I hung around listening to Freakin' Deacon and John Van Pelt. A friend stopped by with his son and I gave him the Q Rock Tour. We had lunch together.

When we rolled back to Rock 'n Roll Heaven, Hennecy was there. More stories. I picked up some great marketing pointers from Henn-Man that afternoon. Then!!! Johnny D. walks in with his three daughters. (Quick! Grab the camera.) He wasn't there more than 10 minutes, but I did get a photo with the man responsible for introducing me to Bill Hennecy and Tom Rogers.

At 5:00, I got to do 2 hours on Q Rock!!!!! I even airchecked myself. Crazy. Just crazy!

As for Sunday and Memorial Day, I spent those days with the family. I don't do enough of that. Nonetheless, I still listened to Q Rock most of the day on Monday. I fired up my laptop and plugged in my tiny, Part 15 compliant FM transmitter and broadcast Q Rock to my backyard.....YEAH! Q Rock helped me get through the brutality of preparing my backyard for a few pallets of sod being delivered to the house this week.

As I write this, I haven't been back to the Broadway at the Beach studios, but I will. I've been busy catching up because I took Monday off this week. Anyway, I've been rockin' with the Q as I travel. I grabbed that tiny, part 15 compliant FM transmitter and plugged into my laptop, along with my AT&T wireless card and Voila!!!!!!!!, It's Q Rock on the go. I can take it anywhere.

Soon, internet access will be in your vehicle. You can already listen on the I-Phone and other PDAs. Locally, HTC Communications just started offering the I-Phone. The Q Crew is back leading the charge in a digital age. I'm fortunate to be a part of it.

I feel like it's history in the making and it's only Wednesday afternoon. Sure, it's only been a week, but..... Oh!, what a week it has been.

The Bargain Barn Gets A Facelift

The Bargain Barn has been a major part of the programming on WLSC for many years. The show used to air weekday mornings from 8:00 - 10:00. Periodically, the popular show would be broadcast on Saturday mornings too.

Somewhere along the way, The Bargain Barn lost its identity. For years, listeners called and basically broadcast their free classfied ads on the air. Once there was lively banter between the hosts of the show and the listeners. It was interactive radio at its best.

Just up the road from WLSC, another well run radio station has a similar program. They do it about as well as I've ever heard. Their program also aired at the same time as The Bargain Barn. It didn't take me long to realize that we'd need to revamp The Bargain Barn as soon as I took over the day to day operations of the radio station.

My first move was changing the time that The Bargain Barn aired. We moved the show to afternoons. The program started airing at 4:00 PM and continued until 6:00 PM Monday through Friday. I even brought in a new host for the show.

Just as the host of the show decided to pursue new opportunities, I had decided to make another round of changes to The Bargain Barn.

I can tell you that it was not my plan to step in as host of the show, but it worked out that way and I couldn't be happier.

Over the holidays, I had time to think about repositioning The Bargain Barn. I had this concept in the back of mind for quite some time, but until I started putting things down on paper, I wasn't making any progress.

BOOM! It hit me. The Bargain Barn wasn't just going to get a facelift. We were going to completely change the program and the way our radio station does business.

In a nutshell, we're establishing business relationships with new clients, that have never advertised on our radio station.....Never. Because of this unique concept, we can now offer goods and services to listeners of The Bargain Barn at savings of 40-60% retail prices.

Let's Talk Nutrition, which airs at 9:00 AM is a brand new program on WLSC's Saturday morning lineup. The program is hosted by Dr. Michael Garko, Ph.D. Let's Talk Nutrition originates in Tampa, Florida and focuses on health and nutrition experts with extensive knowledge of complementary, alternative, and traditional medicine.

Since December, listeners to WLSC have enjoyed the informative program, Horry County Community Calendar. The public affairs program produced and hosted by Herb Malsman airs every Saturday morning at 10:00. Malsman hosted a similar program in New York City. Horry County Community Calendar features interviews with area newsmakers and celebrities and spotlights upcoming events of interest to residents of Horry County.

Immediately following Horry County Community Calendar is the new legal advice program, Ask Jim Law. This 30 minute program focuses on legal issues that are making local and national headlines. The show is produced locally and is hosted by Myrtle Beach attorney, Jim Irvin Jr.

American Country Countdown, hosted by Kix Brooks which used to air on Saturday mornings from 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM can now be hard on Saturday evenings from 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM.

South Carolina Radio Station Goes "All Elvis" to Celebrate Elvis' Birthday

Loris, SC, January 7, 2008 - Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. He would be 73 tomorrow, (January 8) had he lived. AM 1240 WLSC in Loris, SC will suspend normal programming to pay tribute to the undisputed "King of Rock & Roll" starting at midnight tonight.

"It will be non-stop Elvis all day long.", says station manager, Banana Jack Murphy. WLSC will be featuring all of Elvis' big hits as well as some of his more obscure recordings. Murphy adds, "Elvis sang rock, country, gospel, blues. He recorded so many songs that we could be here for days playing all of his recordings." As Banana Jack was doing research for this event, he discovered that Elvis recorded more than 700 songs.

This latest tribute to Elvis Presley should come as no surprise to those listeners that are familiar with Banana Jack's on air antics. Murphy introduced Leon Frazier," The World's Worst Elvis Impersonator" to his radio audience in 1989. Leon Frazier delighted audiences every morning on the ongoing radio feature, Elvis Weather. "I am almost certain that Leon Frazier will be making an appearance. If not, I'll be wearing the white jump suit tomorrow." says Murphy.

Santa Claus to Host Radio Show in South Carolina

Loris, SC, December 11, 2008 - Santa Claus is coming to town and he's on the air. Believe it or not, Kris Kringle will be hosting his own talk radio show on AM 1240 WLSC in Loris, SC. Station manager, Banana Jack Murphy says this may be the first time that Santa Claus has actually hosted his own radio show. "In my 27 years of broadasting, I've never had the opportunity to work this closely with Santa Claus. For him to travel over 4,000 miles to host a radio show for WLSC, especially this time of the year is totally awesome!"

Santa's first day on the air will be Wednesday, December 17 between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Listeners will also be able to hear Ol' St. Nick between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM on Thursday, December 18 and Friday, December 19. Santa will also be on the air between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM on Monday, December 22 and Tuesday, December 23. Kids of all ages are encouraged to call Santa during his radio show. If you're not within the the station's listening area, don't worry. The Christmas Channel is On The Air at WLSCRadio.com

Loris, SC, November 12, 2008 - On Saturday, November 1, 2008 WLSCRadio.com fired up The Christmas Channel. The first song to play was Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley. WLSC owner Banana Jack Murphy says, "When you're a small town radio station, you occasionally have to shake things up a little bit. As far as I know, WLSC is the first radio station in the area to play Christmas music."

WLSC AM 1240 which is located at the busy intersection of Main Street and Broad Street in downtown Loris appears to be ready for Santa. In addition to playing Christmas music, the station is already decorated for the holidays. "Folks driving through town were giving me strange looks as they saw me decorating a Christmas tree on the day after Halloween." says Murphy. He adds, "Christmas is my favorite time of the year. I just couldn't wait any longer. Some folks are saying this might be a rotten Christmas because of the economy. I say Bah-Humbug! to that. If we can get a few more folks in the spirit a little earlier this year then who knows what might happen. I'm an eternal optimist."

Gather your family and relive one of the most spectacular radio moments during the Twentieth Century. "If you're not careful, your imagination could get the best of you.", says station owner, Banana Jack Murphy. " WLSC is going to rebroadcast one of the most well known radio events on the day it happened. How cool is that?", adds Murphy, a 27 year broadcast veteran. War of the Worlds was first broadcast on October 30, 1938. The radio drama was written and produced by The Mercury Theatre on the Air. Orson Welles and his co-writer Howard Koch are credited with creating a radio drama that scared a nation.

How did Welles and his colleagues rattle an entire country? "Perhaps, it was the style of the program.", says Murphy. The drama starts off as a regular music broadcast. As listeners were tuning in for orchestra music, the radio program was interrupted by late breaking news reports of alien attacks from real name locations. Banana Jack adds, "What these guys did is incredible. You have to remember this was 70 years ago. If I was around back then, it might have fooled me too." Since The Mercury Theatre ran without commercial breaks, the dramatic effect was intensified during the original 60 minute broadcast. The effect was also compounded by many folks who tuned in late. It's estimated that a majority of listeners did just that and thus missed Orson Welles' introduction which explained that what was to follow was merely a dramatization. "Don't tune in late or you might get tricked too.”, says Banana Jack.

WLSC AM 1240 and WLSCRadio.com are proud to present without commercial interruption, the original Mercury Theatre presentation on Thursday, October 30, 2008 starting at 9:00 PM. A few months ago, I started referring to AM 1240 WLSC as "The Banana Channel". On Friday, September 12, 2008, we did a soft launch of what I had envisioned.

Too often, folks ask me whatever happened to Harold Dean or Leon Frazier or Claude & Earl? These are just a few of the wacky characters that were a part of my radio show during my many years at WKZQ 101.7 and Wave 104.1 (WYAV).

Well, the answer is...They're Back!

Monday through Friday, starting at 6:00 AM and continuing through 4:00 PM, listeners to AM 1240 WLSC and WLSCRadio.com can relive some of those hilarious moments from days gone by. It was actually fun going through the countless hours of tape and cds and mini-discs to put together the collection of audio goodies that we'll be serving up on the radio. It's really the best of my stuff. (I'll even be spotlighting material from my early days in radio up in North Carolina before I became Banana Jack.

There's a whole lot of stuff that I've saved through the years. I was actually surprised at the number of song parodies that I recorded over the years. There's also bogus commercials and celebrity impersonations. I've done my fair share of celebrity interviews through the years as well. It's all going to be included.

Archiving the material and preparing it for broadcast is an on going process. I've only scratched the surface, but if you ever wondered why I was calling our little radio station, "The Banana Channel", tune in and find out.

Those classic episodes of Leave it to Beaver are coming. Mr. Know-It-All, David Del Rancho, Mr. Roberts and even more of those wacky songs are on the way.

Now, for those who'd worry that I'm shaking things up at AM 1240, I assure you that we're still committed to being a full service station for Loris. We're simply building on the foundation of WLSC and expanding the audience. Thanks to the world wide web, we're only limited by our imagination and creativity.

AM 1240 WLSC will be providing coverage of Tropical Storm Hanna throughout the weekend. In addition to broadcasting on AM 1240, listeners can also tune into the station on the world wide web. Bluegrass on the Corner Radio Show Set For Syndication in Early 2009

It's one thing to say that you're going to syndicate a program to radio stations across the country. It's another thing to actually do it. Nonetheless, production has started on Bluegrass on the Corner.

The syndicated version of Bluegrass on the Corner will debut as a one hour program in early 2009. Plans are already underway to expand the show to a two hour broadcast, but I want to see how the marketplace responds to our little bluegrass show first.

It's been a dream of mine for quite sometime to produce a radio show that originates from the Myrtle Beach area. Who knew that bluegrass would be the vehicle that got us there?

Green Sea Floyds High School Football Kicks Off Season on WLSCRadio.com

Loris, SC, August 12, 2008

Trojan football is on the air! On August 22nd, for the first time ever, fans of Green Sea Floyds High School football will be able to enjoy the play-by-play action of the Trojans broadcast on WLSCRadio.com and also on AM 1240 WLSC. "Our game plan is simple.", says station owner, Banana Jack Murphy. "We're going to broadcast Green Sea Floyds football live on the internet every Friday night. On Saturday mornings, we'll rebroadcast the game on AM 1240 WLSC and also again on WLSCRadio.com."

The play-by-play duties will be handled by Garry Griffith, the former voice of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Most recently, Griffith has been behind the microphone in Montana as the voice of the Great Falls Voyagers, a minor league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. "We're really thrilled to have someone of Griffith's caliber invloved with our latest broadcast venture." says, Banana Jack. "There's just one catch, Griffith will not be in the broadcast booth for the inaugural broadcast." As Green Sea Floyds kicks off the new season against East Bladen, Griffith will still be calling balls and strikes for the Voyagers as they wrap up the regular season in the Pioneer League, so WLSC has implemented plan B.

Lee Camp, who has enjoyed a long career in broadcast television, most recently at WPDE-TV 15 will be in the press box substituting for Griffith on August 22, 2008. Murphy says, "Lee is a real football fan. He's been behind the scenes at many football games. He's been in the booth and down on the sidelines. He's done it all including play-by-play. WLSC is fortunate to have Lee on board as our backup quarterback."

Bob Scarborough, one of the owners of Waccamaw Media Inc. will also provide technical assistance throughout the season for WLSCRadio.com. Scarborough and Murphy have worked together on several broadcast and internet projects for nearly 20 years. Banana Jack adds, "It just wouldn't feel right if Bob wasn't involved in some manner. He and I share a passion for community broadcasting."

During the season, coverage of Green Sea Floyds High School football will begin at 6:30 pm on WLSCRadio.com. AM 1240 WLSC will also rebroadcast the games the following Saturday morning starting at 9:00 AM.

In addition to broadcasting Green Sea Floyds High School football on WLSCRadio.com, listeners can also catch Loris Lions football. WLSC has broadcast Lions football for 23 years. Glenn Hardee and Mike Suggs, owners of Loris Broadcasting Inc. recently signed an agreement with WLSC which guarantees Loris Lions will be heard on AM 1240 WLSC for the next two seasons. "Glenn and Mike have been part of this community for years. They are synonymous with Loris Lions football.", says Murphy. He adds, "We're delighted that the Lions are returning to WLSC again this season."

During the season, coverage of Lions football starts on AM 1240 WLSC at 6:00 PM with a pre-game show and kick-off at 7:00 PM. Listeners can also tune in to Loris Lions football at WLSC Radio.com. "I think fans will really appreciate being able to follow both Loris and Green Sea games at once on our website. This is just another example of how we have raised the bar on community broadcasting and we're just getting started."

Green Sea Floyds Trojan Football is Coming to WLSC

Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC and Green Sea Floyds High School finalized the broadcast rights agreement on June 4, 2008.

I'm excited that WLSC is going to be the "Voice of the Trojans" in 2008. Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC will be issuing a press release in the coming days with more details about the broadcast team that will handle the pre-game, play-by-play and post-game broadcasts.

We're still assembling our broadcast team, but we have finalized an agreement with one of the area's most well known play-by-play talents.

Wild West Weekends

There's no doubt about it. I'm a cowboy wannabe. I prefer cowboy boots over sneakers. I prefer jeans (Wranglers) to dress pants. I've got a closet full of cool western shirts. I also have a nice collection of BIG belt buckles, although I don't wear too many of those.

I love western swing music and I even subscribe to Cowboys & Indians magazine.

I have 4 sets of steer horns mounted in my ranch house, which is located about 7 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. (Hey, I'm a Salt Water Cowboy!!!!)

I've got a living room full of big leather chairs and big leather ottomans. I even have a picture of John Wayne hanging on the wall by my front door.

Real cowboys would say I'm all hat and no cattle.

They may be right. My wife is almost as bad as I am. We have more pairs of boots that we'll ever wear. She has too much turquoise jewelry. Wait a second, you can never have too much jewelry. Especially turquoise.

My son, Tristan who is only 3 years old knows The Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy and The Duke. I thinks it's way past time that I introduced him to "Rodeo".

Since Tristan was born, he's ridden more horses than I have. Yes, I am counting the ones outside the supermarket.

Of course, one thing that my son and I really enjoy is our Wild West Weekends. You could say it's our ...mane event. Sorry.

The Bluegrass Channel?

WLSC could be called The Bluegrass Channel. Listeners can tune in to AM 1240 every weekday at Noon and hear one hour of classic and new 'grass on Bluegrass on the Corner.

On Saturday, WLSC has a two hour version of Bluegrass on the Corner which starts at 10:00 AM. At Noon, It's Knee Deep in Bluegrass with Cindy Baucom.

There's more.

Into the Blue, hosted by Terry Herd hits the airwaves at 2:00 PM and continues until 5:00 PM.

We're still not done.

Our newest show is The Tim White Bluegrass Show which airs every Saturday afternoon from 5:00 until 7:00. Tim White is best known for hosting the popular televsion program, Song of the Mountains which is seen weekly on Public Television.

On Sundays, WLSC airs Great Stuff Gospel at Noon. This show features the best in bluegrass gospel.

There are plans to add even more quality bluegrass programming.

Bluegrass on the Waccamaw....What A Day It Was

Bluegrass on the Waccamaw was an incredible show. It was a BIG day for us. We had a few technical glitches, but those are to be expected. When it was all said and done, we hit a homerun with our coverage of the bluegrass festival.

The downside is that I've lost my voice. It is completely gone. I think I puched myself way too hard the last couple of weeks.

Oh well, life should be interesting this week. How does a radio man pay the bills when he can't speak?

WLSC Shares Bluegrass With The World

AM 1240 WLSC, America's Biggest Little Station is at it again. Join www.wlscradio.com for a behind the scenes broadcast at Bluegrass on the Waccamaw this Saturday, May 10th. Conway, SC is the scene for what radio station owner Banana Jack Murphy says is going to be an exciting day. "I can't speak for the rest of the broadcast industry, but we're trailblazing with our 1,000 watt AM station. Thanks to modern technology, we're only limited by our imagination.", says Murphy.

WLSC apparently has found a real niche with bluegrass here along the South Carolina coast and they're sharing what they're doing with the rest of the world. Murphy adds, "Our behind-the-scenes broadcast is really going to be a treat for listeners. We'll actually be right out there in the crowd as well as backstage with the bands. This is going to to be a blast!"

The lineup is quite impressive for Bluegrass on the Waccamaw. Among those scheduled to appear are: III Tyme Out, Grasstowne, The Lewis Family, Drover's Old Time Medicine Show, The Bluegrass Strangers, The Snyder Family Band, New River, County Line Band and students from The Low Country Bluegrass Academy. The show starts at 12:30 PM and continues until 10:00 PM. The internet broadcast on www.wlscradio.com is scheduled to start at Noon.

Banana Jack will be joined on the broadcast by Tim White, host of the syndicated radio program, The Tim White Bluegrass Show. White is also the host of Mountain Songs, a television program which is seen nationally on Public Television. Bob Scarborough, another radio-television veteran will also be helping out on the broadcast.

AM 1240 WLSC in Loris, SC was recently purchased by Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC and one of the first moves the new company made was bringing bluegrass programming to the Myrtle Beach, SC area. WLSC is the home of Bluegrass on the Corner, a locally produced bluegrass show that showcases regional bluegrass bands live from The Loris Chamber of Commerce stage which is actually located in the WLSC studios.

1989 Was A Very Good Year

It really doesn't seem like it's been nearly two decades since I first opened a microphone and said, "Good Morning!" to the good folks of South Carolina, but here it is another anniversary.

On April 24, 1989, The Banana Jack Murphy Show premiered on WKZQ 101.7 FM. The radio station was owned by Grand Strand Broadcasting back in those days. Tom Rogers was the president of the company and Bill Hennecy was the General Manager.

Man, those guys rocked. I remain friends with them even to this day. In 1997, Tom Rogers sold WKZQ to Hirsch Broadcasting he left radio. Bill Hennecy left radio too. Despite the ownership change, I stayed around and did mornings at 101.7 FM the entire time that Hirsch owned the station. Three years later, Hirsch Broadcasting sold WKZQ to Next Media in the summer of 2000. Once more, I survived an ownership change.

I remained on the air at WKZQ until September of 2001. When I left WKZQ to replace Howard Stern on Wave 104.1 (WYAV) on September 17th, I only walked about 30 feet down a hall and entered another studio door.

Ironically enough, the Wave 104 studio was located in the former office of Tom Rogers. You see, when Next Media purchased WKZQ from Hirsch, they also purchased some valuable real estate. Since, WKZQ was just one of 5 stations owned by Next Media in the Myrtle Beach market they had to put them somewhere, so they moved them all to the original WTGR/WKZQ property on Ocala Street. They moved everything to where I already was.

Geez, I spent nearly 18 years on Ocala Street in Myrtle Beach. Twelve and a half years at WKZQ and another five and a half at WYAV. When I signed off for the last time on April 17, 2007, I walked out of the same door in which I was hired by Bill Hennecy and Tom Rogers. Wow! Ain't life funny?

So, I'd have to say 1989 was a very good year. The others haven't been too bad either.

Can You Believe It's Been a Year....?

I think I will always remember April 17, 2007. It was my last day on the air in Myrtle Beach radio. After doing morning radio in the area nonstop since April 24, 1989, my streak ended.

Still to this day, I'm asked, "What really happened?" Folks, nothing happened except I was replaced by a syndicated morning show. It was a cost cutting move by my former employer and that's the bottom line.

Those things happen. Recently, the ever changing radio business in Myrtle Beach claimed even more victims. There were some good radio folks that are probably wondering what the heck is to become of them. All I can say is, "DON'T PANIC".

One year ago, I assure you that I was not thinking about forming my own broadcast company and actually owning a radio station of my own.

But, looky here. It happened. Can you believe it been a year....?

Hooray, We Did It!

Well, it wasn't a perfect broadcast, but we did it. We actually pulled it off. Thanks to the technical expertise of Bob Scarborough, we were able to do an entire broadcast of Bluegrass on the Corner live from an automobile dealership.

Bob, who often fills in for me on-the-air when I leave town, took the lead on this one and by the time that the so called experts got around to returning my phone calls,Bob had figured out what we needed to do.

Now, we're already laying out a game plan to expand on this successful test run.

Live from Atlantic Ford, It's Bluegrass on the Corner

WLSC is boldly going where no other radio station in this area has gone before. We will broadcast our entire show, Bluegrass on the Corner from Atlantic Ford on the radio. Sure, it's been done before, but not the way we're going to be doing it.

I can't divulge our stealth technology secrets. Not yet, anyway. I can tell you that what we're going to be unveiling is not new. Heck, we were doing this 8 years ago.

So, come out to the Grand Opening of Atlantic Ford on Highway 9 in Longs this Saturday and see what WLSC is going to be doing that will frankly put the Big Boys to shame.

We had planned a major event, but mid-week, we ran into some technical challenges that we didn't resolve until yesterday. We were actually planning to have a live band perform at the automobile dealership while we broadcast our program, but I didn't want to bite off more than I could chew in the event that we do have some technical issues.

Still, we're going to put on a show. It's Bluegrass on the Corner, Live from Atlantic Ford this Saturday, April 12th. You can hear the broadcast starting at 10:00 AM and continuing until Noon on AM 1240 and online at WLSCRadio.com.

Who Listens to AM Radio?

Go ahead and ask me. It seems everyone else is these days. I constantly get asked, "Who listens to AM radio?"

That's funny. Seriously, if you'd like to know who's listening to WLSC, then come hang out at the corner of Main Street and Broad Street in downtown Loris. You'll see first-hand why curiosity killed the cat.

Here's the deal, an unsuspecting motorist pulls up to the light in front of our studios. While sitting there, they see the vintage marquee sporting our larger-than-life call letters and frequency and whatever message I've bombarded the public with that week.

Wait, it get's better. Our studios are right on the corner. You can actually see the announcer on the air. Yes, we really do have live human beings behind our microphone. Now, all we have to do is smile and wave and watch the motorist reach for their radio dial and then they tune in to 1240 AM. In a perfect world, the light should change, the car behind them honks and they drive away unable to tune us out, at least until they get down the road.

Grand Opening Kicks Off 50th Anniversary Celebration

I didn't get a lot of sleep this week preparing for the Grand Opening celebration of our the WLSC studios. There was plenty to do in preperation for the event like painting, cleaning, hanging photos and making sure the invitations were mailed and sending out press releases to the media and.....I think you get the idea.

Folks started arriving before 9 AM and they kept coming through the afternoon. The Morris Brothers kicked off Bluegrass on the Corner and entertained our standing room only crowd with two hours of good ol' bluegrass music. Wow!

We aired the event on WLSC and even on our website, WLSCRadio.com. It was HUGE! Speaking of huge, Dolly joined us while we had lunch and posed for photos and entertained the crowd with a couple of songs. It was HUGE!

After lunch, Promiseland, a Southern Gospel group from Wilimington, NC entertained the audience with a full set of inspirational songs.

Considering we had rain all day, we're pleased with the turnout and the response. A couple of newspapers stopped by and a reporter from WPDE-TV 15. Man, I love it when the media talks about what we're doing. I have a feeling they're going to be doing a whole lot of talking about us because we've got BIG plans for America's Biggest Little Station. After all WLSC is celebrating 50 years of service to the Carolinas!

Banana Jack Will Appear on Carolina People on Tuesday, April 1st

I thought it was my job to help promote Carolina People, but Greg Everett and Shari Harms extended an invitation for me to appear on the popular daily television show and I just couldn't say "No".

Greg Everett may host the program, but it's Shari who goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure Greg is loaded for bear when the tape starts rolling.

Anyway, I will be Greg Everett's guest on Tuesday, April 1st. We'll be talking about WLSC's 50 year history and my 25 years in boradcasting. We'll even highlight some of the events taking place at our Grand Opening celebration at the WLSC studios on Saturday, April 5th.

WLSC Grand Opening Scheduled for April 5th

How does a radio station which has been on the air for 50 years celebrate a Grand Opening? You just do it. It's that simple.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 is a day that we hope folks will be talking about for a long time. Our Grand Opening celebration will take place on the same day that The Loris Chamber of Commerce sponsors an old-fashioned Sidewalk Sale. Does anyone remember when small town used to do this? Man, I used to get a kick when my mom would take me to town and there would be stuff on the street. Cool!

Anyway, The City of Loris is closing Main Street from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. All the merchants on Main Street will be bringing merchandise out on the sidewalk. It's going to be a day that brings a lot folks to the downtown area and we're going to capitalize on it. We're basically opening up the doors so folks can get an upclose look at how radio is made fresh daily from the cornwer of Main Street and Broad Street.

The Chamber of Commerce will swinging by for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. (Yeah!, another photo-op...Hooray!) We're even going to serve up some delicious chicken bog around lunch time. (Heck, chicken bog made Loris famous, so it can't hurt us. Right?) We're also going to have a bluegrass band join us for the day.

WLSC will be kicking off a new live radio show called Bluegrass on the Corner. Our first broadcast will feature The Morris Brothers. Bluegrass on the Corner will debut at 10:00 am and will continue until Noon. We're going to be doing a lot of live bluegrass from downtown Loris. Bluegrass on the Corner has the potential to become one of the most talked about radio shows in the Carolinas. (Hey, I'm a dreamer...)

Throughout the day, we'll also entertain the masses with a Dolly Parton impersonator and Granny Clampett from Dino's TV Variety Show, a live show which tuly is one of the undiscovered gems of nightly entertainment along the Grand Strand. Carolina People & GE Media Secures Naming Rights at WLSC

Since January 1st, at the top of every hour, WLSC has been promoting the television show, Carolina People hosted by Greg Everett. Greg and I started talking about this before I even took over the day to day operations of WLSC, so to finalize the deal is really exciting. We're honored to have GE Media on board.

Greg Everett, who I consider a close personal friend, has worked closely with me on several projects over the last decade and I'm thrilled to have him involved with what we're doing at WLSC radio. We initially did this deal on a handshake and finally got around to finalizing the contract this week.

Now, without getting into all the boring legal and monetary details, just pay close attention to the Legal IDs which air around the top of every hour.

Greg and his company, GE Media, saw the real value in acquiring naming rights to our new studios. In addition to promotional announcements at the top of every hour, Carolina People has also acquired ad space on our vintage style marquee located at the corner of Main Street and Broad Street in downtown Loris. WLSC will also be promoting other GE Media ventures in the not so distant future.

Quit Please, We're Broadcasting

Man, what have I done? No more sleeping past 6:00 AM. I have returned to morning radio. My first morning back (January 28) was not what I had anticipated. How could it be that I couldn't think of witty things to say. My timing was off. I actually felt like I was working. Man, I was rusty.

By the end of the week, I was getting back in the groove, but gone are the days of just concentrating on a radio show. As station owner and on-air personality and account executive and janitor, I find that there's always something going on. I don't think I've seen the top of my desk in three weeks. What is the deal with all this paperwork.

Just as soon as I think I'm making a little progress....screech! Put on the brakes, there's another speedbump!

I've obviously had to learn how to delegate. I certainly can't do it all, but I'm getting more creative with my time management. (Who says men can't multi-task?)

You can catch the morning show weekdays at 6:00 AM. I usually hang around the microphone until 10:00 AM. Please be gentle with your criticism. The old kid is just plain rusty.

Go to the newsstand and pick up a copy of The Loris Scene. Before I headed off to the frozen tundra of Toledo and Detroit, I was interviewed for a follow-up story. During the interview, my 3 year old son, Tristan interrupted me to assist him with potty training. In fact, he came running up to me with his pants already off. It was one of those moments that only a parent could enjoy. Perhaps, enjoyment is not the right word, but it was funny.

So, the interview came to an end (no pun intended...) and I couldn't recall what I even said. So, your guess is as good as mine. Go ahead and pick up a copy and see for yourself.

A friend of mine asked me earlier today if I'd seen the paper today. I had to say "No. Not yet." I couldn't get my hands on The Loris Scene in Detroit, but since I'm back home....How about two or three copies? After all, I have to send one to my mother-in-law.

Good Morning Bob!

For those of you wondering about the "new" voice on WLSC, wonder no more. It was my buddy, Bob Scarborough. Bob was kind enough to fill-in for me while I was visiting family and freezing in Ohio. Boy, it sure was cold!

I got up one morning and it was 1 degree with a wind chill of -10. Ouch!

For the record, I was visiting my wife's family. As a matter of fact, we attended a surprise birthday party for my mother-in-law. ( I can never, ever, ever, never tell you how old she was or is....forget it) So, now it's back to the grind.

I'll continue working behind the scenes until Monday, January 28th. Although, I have been heard from time to time on WLSC, The Banana Jack Murphy Show doesn't officially return until next week.

Good Morning Bob will return from time to time whenever I have to hit the road.

Boy, news sure travels fast in the bluegrass community. I'm already getting emails regarding an interview that took place just yesterday morning.

Ted Lehmann just happened to be vacationing in the Myrtle Beach area and heard through the grapevine that WLSC radio was airing and promoting bluegrass music in the area, so he gave me call.

I had met Ted and his wife, Irene last year at Bluegrass on the Waccamaw. He was even a guest on my television show, River Talk with Jack Murphy. So, when he wanted to give me some free publicity, I jumped at the opportunity.

I knew a lot of folks checked out his blog, but boy was I surprised by the attention that I'm already getting and it's been up on the web less than a day. WOW!

Ted and his wife took some incredible photographs while visiting our new radio station in Loris. I really love the marquee. It's an eye-catcher for sure.

EVENT: The look of downtown Loris will be changing thanks to the efforts of Banana Jack Murphy, the new owner of AM 1240 WLSC. On Friday morning (January 11, 2008), the unveiling of a new theatre-style marquee will take place at the new WLSC studios located at 4164 Main Street in Loris. Murphy says, "We're located at the busiest intersection in town, so why not take advantage of the location." The station is located at the corner of Main Street and Broad Street (SC 9 & US 701).

DETAILS: The sign will feature the station's call letters and frequency in 18" neon channel letters at the top and a white message board in the center. Murphy says, "There will be no doubt in anyone's mind after this sign is erected that there's a new radio station on the corner." In addition to promoting station activities on the marquee, WLSC will also promote community events such as The Loris Bog-Off. Murphy adds, "The inspiration to include a theatre style marquee came from a recent family visit to Mt. Airy, NC." Banana Jack, a big fan of The Andy Griffith Show, saw where he could bring a little bit of Mayberry back to Horry County. "I took one look at that cinema marquee sign in downtown Mt. Airy and I envisioned what a similar sign would look like in downtown Loris. I just couldn't stop thinking about it. Loris reminds me of Mayberry anyway, with a small town charm, so we just had to do it." Murphy adds, "I can't wait to see what it looks like at night. We're going to prove to everyone in the world that Loris does not roll up the sidewalks at night." The retro sign was created by Neon Works in Myrtle Beach, that company's team will start erecting the sign around 8:30 AM. The new sign even inspired the design of WLSC’s new web site, www.wlscradio.com . “We looked at a lot of radio stations’ sites and they all seemed so busy. Once the marquee became a reality for WLSC, Jack and I both knew what the site had to look like,” explains Barb Krumm. The station can be heard worldwide as it streams from the new website being launched simultaneously.

PURCHASE: Banana Jack Murphy, who has been on the air in this area since 1989, formed a new company in July of 2007 with his wife Barb Krumm. Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC, signed a letter of intent to purchase WLSC on October 3, 2007. The FCC approved the sale of the station in mid November 2007 and Banana Jack Murphy Production LLC took over the day-to-day operations of WLSC on November 30, 2007.

ON AIR: WLSC started broadcasting from the new studios on December 27, 2007. The first announcer on the air was Murphy and Krumm's three year old son, Tristan, who simply uttered, "WLSC radio!"

PROGRAMMING: WLSC is the epitome of hometown radio. Country music can be heard during the day and Southern Gospel is broadcast from 6:00 until 9:00 during the evenings. WLSC recently started broadcasting 5 hours of bluegrass on Saturday afternoons and plans are underway to expand on that. A new show, Bluegrass on the Corner is in the works. This program will feature live bluegrass music played by local and regional acts. This show will be broadcast on AM 1240 WLSC and on the station's website, www.wlscradio.com.

Broadcasting From Downtown Loris

The switch was thrown today (Thursday, December 27, 2007) and WLSC started broadcasting from Main Street in Loris, SC. We basically pulled the plug at the old location and then pushed a button at the transmitter site and (Poof!) we were on the air from our new studios.

The first announcer at the new location was my 3 year old son, Tristan who simply said, "W-L-S-C Radio!" That was all there was to it, now back to our regularlly scheduled programming.

I'll be behind the microphone for a while tomorrow, but don't expect to hear any of my usual radio antics until early next year.

The Banana Jack Murphy Show is not scheduled to return until January 2008. In the meantime, I'll have my hands full with a lot of behind the scenes stuff that is not very glamorous, but is required to make WLSC what I envision and that is...(drum roll please!)... The Biggest Little Station in America. You heard it here first!

Prince & Prince To The Rescue

Last weekend, I was in the woods with my good friend, Bob Scarborough clearing trees and briars at the transmitter site. Yesterday, I watched someone else do it. i called the man. Edward Prince of Prince & Prince Properties assisted me in clearing my acreage. In just a few hours, Edward finished what would have taken me several days to complete. It was well worth the price.

Now, the transmitter site is about 95% completed which means I won't have to spend the weekend in the woods with Bob. By the way, Bob the lumberjack is driving around the county right now giving me updates on the signal quality of WLSC. Seriously, he calls me every time he picks up the station in an area that he believes is new WLSC territory. I think that he's calling me again right now....Wait a second!

Hi Bob, where are you now?.............Really, you can hear the station on Forestbrook Road? That's great. You're turning on to Limerick Drive. Hey, Bob I'm busy with this blog thing. Can you hold on? Yeah, I know we've got to go back and trim up around the guy wires. Sure, we can do that over the Christmas holidays. Hold on.

I've gotta go. Bob is really excited today and to tell you the truth, so am I!

On The Line For Me Today

It has taken weeks to resolve one pesky technical issue. Today, we resolved the problem. My friends at HTC came through and we finally have established contact between our transmitter and our studios, which happen to be about two miles apart. After a few tests, we should be in the position to start relocating to the new studios.

I honestly believe that when we start broadcasting from downtown Loris, we're really going to start creating a buzz. I just hope that buzz isn't on the line.

Timber! We've Started Clearing The Transmitter Site

I knew it had to be done, but it certainly wasn't my idea to start clearing trees at the transmitter site, but that's what I was up to today. My good friend, Bob Scarborough volunteered his services and he actually sort of took charge and so, I was on the hook. It appeared to me that Bob was determined to rid the transmitter site of unwanted trees with or without me, so since I own the place I figured I'd better be there.

So, there we were with two chainsaws that didn't work. We bought a new one. I borrowed a weed whacker from a friend and we started what was going to a long project. As I said earlier, this had to be done, but it was certainly more work than I had anticipated.

If you know anything about AM radio, then you know that there is a ground system of copper lines that extend out from the base of the tower. There's a ton of trees and briar and all kinds of nasty vegetation growing where it shouldn't and that is possibly detrimental for WLSC's signal.

Well, we took down a few trees and we really cleaned up the base of the tower and then the rains came. Yeah, it rained on my parade, but I think we'll be back... unless I decide to call the man.

If you remember the episode of The Andy Griffith Show where Aunt Bee buys a freezer full of meat from Diamond Jim's and then her freezer goes out and she doesn't want o pay the man from Mt. Pilot to come out and fix it and Andy says over and over, "Just call the man!" I might have to do that.

After I got home and cleaned up, it looks like I got into a fight with a polecat. One of those nasty briars cut my ear. It looks like I got my ear pierced. I'm the owner of a radio station. i can't look like I've got my ears pierced. Who's going to believe that i was wrestling a polecat anyway? Who's going to believe that I actually did some work?

Man, I hope this improves the radio station's signal. Ouch, I found another scratch. I'm calling the man.

Tristan Has a Birthday Party at WLSC

A few weeks ago, my wife, Barb and I decided that it would be a wonderful idea to have our son's birthday party at the new radio station studios. It was a grand idea, but we were way behind on construction. I was also a little bit over budget and just a little bit stressed over the whole situation.

There was even a few nights this week where I was painting until midnight. I had to paint until 2:30 one morning because I made a major mistake at the hardware store. I put the wrong color of paint on three walls and there was just no way, I was going to let all the folks coming to the birthday party witness my major no-no.

Well, after a few sleepless nights, a couple of arguments with my wife and the guys doing my construction work and last but not least, I got a cold, we pulled it off. My son, Tristan had a wonderful party. Santa Claus was there and 16 kids and their parents showed up. Man, we had a crowd in that radio station.

Whew, we really were cutting it close to pull off the party, but it was worth it. It was actually a cool birthday party for my son, who actually celebrates his 3rd birthday on December 22nd, but that is so close to Christmas, we just had to move the birthday party up a few days.

Now, if we could only work out those technical difficulties that are prohibiting me from moving the studios to downtown Loris. Oh no, I'm stressing out again and I have this terrible cold and.......I think I'll go take a nap.

Finally, I'm A Station Owner

There was no ticker tape parade. There were no fireworks. No champagne. No hip-hip-hooray! Nonetheless, at 5:00 PM on Friday, November 30th, I became a station owner. I would imagine that most of us that have ever spent anytime behind a microphone have dreamed of owning our own station. Well, dreams do come true.

The goal now is to remain steadfast in making my vision for WLSC a reality. Following the business plan and the mission statement and drawing upon our past experience combined with the absolute need to ask God for guidance on every important decision are the invisible keys that will keep this dream from turning into a nightmare.

FCC Approves Sale of Station, Banana Jack Takes Over November 30th

The waiting is almost over. On November 14, 2007, the assignment of license (WLSC) from J.A.R.C. Broadcasting to Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC was granted by the FCC. Hurray!!!! The financial aspects on this deal should be completed by November 30, 2007.

A Few Days In The Desert

Construction was moving really slow at the new WLSC studios, so I decided to take a few days and visit Phoenix, Arizona. It was mostly a pleasure trip, but I did have some business to take care of out in the desert.

My wife flew out on a Monday and I decided to join her later in the week. If you haven't visited the Phoenix/Tucson area, I suggest that you do it.

My first night there, my wife and I spent a few hours at a dude ranch in Fort McDowell. I met a real singing cowboy who gave me a CD of original songs. I wonder how he knew I was in the radio business?

The next day, I got to spend a few hours in Casa Grande and Eloy. Why? Well, I thought everyone knew about the coming economic boom to those two towns. There's even been talk of a new amusement park coming to that part of the desert. Man, that would surely make me happy and a whole lot of other folks as well.

I made a small and I do mean small real estate investment in that area a few years ago. Who in their right mind would buy land in the desert, right? Right! I'll let you know how it works out.

Of course, there's more to Arizona than walking around in the desert. My wife and I rented a convertible and went cruising up I-17 to spend a day in Sedona. Man, those Red Rocks rock!!!! It was truly breathtaking.

All in all, it was a marvelous trip except we were cursed with mechanical problems on our return flight. I didn't think we were ever going to get off the ground in Phoenix. We were delayed by a full hour and 45 minutes. Ouch! Our connecting flight in Atlanta was also delayed, so it took a lot longer than expected to get back home.

Gee whiz, usually just the thought of flying is enough to make me hot around the collar, but after spending a few days in the desert, I just took the delays in stride. I really did. After all, I was just coming back to the same old construction delays and red tape associated with purchasing a new business.

Man, I could use a few more days in the desert.

Construction Continues On New Studios

I knew the process of buying a radio station was going to take time. I knew that building new studios was going to take time too. I take comfort in the fact that one day in the not so distant future, I'll actually be the one that owns the radio station.

As far as the day to day operations of the radio station go right now, I ain't the man. I'm just showing up to host a daily talk show and that's it. Someone else is making sure the bills get paid and the station stays on the air. One day, I'll get to deal with all of that.

Now when it comes to the new studios, that's my baby. I have to make sure that the new construction continues, but I'm not the one hammering the nails or erecting the new walls. I just try to make sure that all the bills get paid. I thought about telling folks that I'm overseeing the project, which really means I'm just trying to keep the bills paid. So, all I can say at this point is that construction continues on the new studios.....and the check is in the mail.

WLSC Keeps Making The News

Oh boy! I get excited when the newspapers write about me. I have really been loving it the last few weeks. Initially, The Sun News broke the story on October 5th & 6th about my recent purchase of WLSC 1240 AM in Loris.

A week and a half later, The Loris Times/North Myrtle Beach Times spread the good news.

The following week, The Horry Independent printed a story about my recent broadcast acquisition.

Just this week, The Loris Scene published an article about my latest radio adventure and even highlighted the story with a quote in big bold print. (You can pick up a copy at newsstands through Tuesday, October 30th.)

Let me just say "Thank You" to everyone in the media that has gone the extra mile to say a few good words about me and WLSC. The attention that I have received from all of you is helping to create a buzz on the streets of Loris and beyond.

I figure, when folks are talking about you that means they know about you. When they know about you, then it makes whatever you're trying to do a little easier. Right? I just wish I knew what I was trying to do.

Right now, it looks like my biggest challenge is to figure out how to get that little ol' radio station in Loris to make some more news this week. How am I going to do that? Hhmmm. I wonder.

Banana Jack's Bog-Off Backstage Tour

Initially, I thought it would be a good idea to let folks get a sneak peek at the ongoing construction of the new WLSC studios, but then I started having visions of visitors stumbling over a pile of boards or something falling on their heads, so I regretfully had to cancel Banana Jack's Bog-Off Backstage Tour before it even got started.

There will be thousands of folks from all over descending on Loris, SC this weekend for the 28th Annual Bog-Off. Best of all, many of these good people will be passing by my new front door. Man, I could have done what those fine folks at Hard Rock Park are doing with their successful Backstage Tour. Oh well, there will be plenty to do at the festival without me trying to capitalize on the event.

As a matter of fact, I will get to promote my latest broadcast venture. There's going to be a stage set up right on Main Street in front of my building and I have agreed to emcee the events from the stage. Once a showman, always a showman...right? I wonder if I'm related to P.T. Barnum? Hhhmmmm!

Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC Files FCC Application To Purchase WLSC AM 1240 in Loris, South Carolina

(Sunday, October 7, 2007) The Banana Jack Murphy Show could be returning to the airwaves very shortly. For more than 18 years, Banana Jack delighted morning radio listeners along the Grand Strand.

Banana Jack Murphy, a native of North Carolina moved to the Myrtle Beach area in 1989 to host the morning show on WKZQ 101.7. He would remain on that dial position for more than 12 years until he moved over to Wave 104.1 in September of 2001 to replace a controversial nationally syndicated program.

Banana Jack would remain at Wave 104.1 for 5 1/2 years. Murphy's farewell broadcast was April 17, 2007. Oddly enough, the popular local radio host was replaced by a nationally syndicated program.

Although Jack exited morning radio he didn't completely disappear. Banana Jack also hosts the popular televison program, River Talk with Jack Murphy which airs daily at 6:30 AM on WWMB- TV 21. River Talk can also be seen at 1:00 PM, 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM daily on HTC Cable Channel 4. Murphy has hosted River Talk since 1997.

Over the summer, Murphy and his wife, Barb Krumm, who currently serves as marketing and public relations director for Ocean Lakes Family Campground, formed a new company, Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC. Since forming this new company, the couple has been working hard to put together a deal with J.A.R.C. Broadcasting Inc., which currently owns WLSC 1240 AM in Loris, SC.

Finally, after months of negotiating, the deal came together. On Wednesday, October 3, 2007, an application was filed with the FCC seeking transfer of the radio station's license from J.A.R.C. Broadcasting Inc. to Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC. Upon FCC approval of the sale, Banana Jack will take over the day to day operations of WLSC.

Currently, Banana Jack Murphy is hosting the well known Bargain Barn program, which airs daily between 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM on WLSC. The Bargain Barn is basically an on-air classifieds program which provides listeners an opportunity to buy, sell and trade just about anything one could imagine. Listeners are invited to call (843) 756-1223 to be part of the program.

New studios and offices for WLSC are currently under construction at 4164 Main Street, at the intersection of US 701 and SC 9 in downtown Loris.

One of the most exciting things that will be happening at the new WLSC studios is live music. Bluegrass and other genres of music will be performed live by local and regional bands and artists on site and will be broadcast on the station. In the not so distant future, listeners around the world will also be able to tune in to WLSC via the radio station's website, which is currently being developed.

Banana Jack Murphy is thrilled to be back on the radio and is committed to building a community radio station that the City of Loris can be proud of calling it's own.

Banana Jack has been married to Barb Krumm for 10 years. The couple has one son, Tristan who will be 3 in December 2007.

The Sun News Puts Me On The Front Page, Above The Fold

Wow! My jaw hit the floor at the convenience store. I got up this morning to pick up a copy of The Sun News just to see what Lisa Fleisher had written about me.

I was thinking I would get a few lines in the Local & Regional section. Heck, I would have really been excited if I were to appear in the Money section, but NO! OH NO!

I couldn't believe it. I was on the cover....the Front Page! My name was above the fold. I picked up one, two, three, four copies of the paper and my name was right there on everyone of them.

I wasn't dreaming. It was for real. Yessir, the front page. Life is so gooooooood! I wanted to let out a yell right there in the convenience store, but I refrained. I didn't even holler when I got outside or even whil driving home in my truck.

But when I got home, I hollered and danced, kissed my wife on the cheek and danced some more. She was just as amazed at my story being on the front page as I was. My son, who can't even read yet was excited and gave his daddy a big ol' high-five! What a day!

So, here's to you Lisa Fleisher and to all of your colleagues at The Sun News. You have given my little broadcast company a much needed shot in the arm. The story was accurate and on-the-money. I especially loved the phrase...."unceremoniously booted". I'm gonna have to remember that one.

Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC Purchases WLSC

For months, I've been keeping readers of this blog in the dark. Well, no more! On Wednesday afternoon (October 3, 2007) an application was filed with the FCC. My company is in the process of purchasing WLSC 1240 AM in Loris, SC from J.A.R.C. Broadcasting.

I will not take over operations of the radio station until the FCC approves the transaction, but I can tell you that new offices and studios are under construction in downtown Loris.

The official press release was to go out on Monday, but The Sun News here in Myrtle Beach, acting on a tip broke the story. I spoke with Lisa Fleisher, a reporter for The Sun News just minutes after the story first appeared online at www.myrtlebeachonline.com. You can check out the story for yourself.

Over the past 2 1/2 hours, I have spoken with other members of the media, but my hat is off to The Sun News for scooping everyone including me. They got the word out before I could even get the story up on this blog. Man, news sure travels fast. Stay tuned for more details.

43 Used To Be Old, But Not Anymore

Today is my 43rd birthday. I can't believe I'm actually 43. Heck, I used to think that was old. 43. It's just a number, right?

Anyway, when I was a boy growing up in North Carolina, the number 43 meant just one thing....Richard Petty. Now, my father was a fan of David Pearson, but that didn't keep me from putting STP stickers on my bicycle. Whenever I'd see that number 43, I'd yell out, "It's the King!"

Yeah, that number 43 was special to me and countless others. Even though my dad rooted more for Fords on Sunday he proudly put a Richard Petty for Secretary of State sticker on his truck back when The King had political aspirations.

Now that I reflect on 43 being more than just a number on a stock car, I am reminded of how I used to think that my dad was just so old. I fondly remember when my dad was 33, then 43, then 53 and most recently 63. Heck, that's not old.

I also fondly remember when I was 23, then 33 and now 43. Heck, that's not old.

For my son, who is not even 3 yet, he could care less about how old I am. To be perfectly honest, he's just getting good at counting to 10. To him, 43 is just a number on a race car, thanks to the Disney/Pixar movie, "Cars". Whenever he sees 43, he yells out, "It's the King!"

I would imagine if he were a little older that he'd be thinking that 43 is old just like I once did. Well, 43 might appear to be old until you get there yourself and then you realize the truth. The cold hard truth. 43 used to be old, but not anymore.

We Could Make The Announcement This Week

A New Lease...On Life

Today, I signed a two-year lease on a prime office location. Banana Jack Murphy Productions LLC is moving to Loris, SC. I will still maintain a home in Myrtle Beach and I'll continue to pursue business endeavors along the Grand Strand, but when I finally make the Big Announcement you'll understand why I've moved my headquarters to Loris.

What my little company is about to do in Loris is a dream come true for me. God has truly blessed me and my family. In less than 3 months, I went from being unemployed to forming my own company. 3 months later, my new company successfully puts together a deal and we're currently in the process of purchasing an existing business.

Today, I signed a new lease on an office building, but in doing so I wonder if I didn't also sign a new lease ....on life!

I almost couldn't believe my ears when I got the news that my offer had been accepted. I'm still uneasy about discussing the details of this endeavor because there is still much to be done. After Labor Day and a weeklong trip to visit my wife's family, we'll hit the ground running.

Just when I was getting ready to make the Big Announcement, I got a call that made me put on the brakes. In the eleventh hour, interference from a third party. After all these hours of crunching numbers, dealing with bankers and lawyers and perfecting the art of negotiating....SCREECH!

So what's my next move. I wait.

Regardless of the outcome, this has been a rewarding experience, but I will be disappointed if this deal does not come together.

Banana Jack Is Back On The Air...Or Is He?

Yesterday, I put on a pair of headphones and fired up a microphone for the first time since April 17th. For the next few weeks, I'll be hosting the morning radio show on WLSC 1240 AM in Loris, SC. I'm basically just keeping the seat warm and I'm only on the air from 8:00 until 10:00 AM.

How about this? I'm not even getting paid. I'm doing this simply to help out the radio station. (Maybe I do have too much time on my hands.) Believe it or not, this is all part of The Big Idea!

I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up

July 24, 2007 will be a day that I'll never forget. It was on that day that I fell in my house and was unable to move. It was one of the most painful experiences in my life.

For about a week, I'd been feeling some soreness in my right hip, but I didn't really pay much attention to it. I figured I'd take a few over the counter pain remedies, get a little rest and I'd heal on my own. Boy, was I ever wrong.

On the afternoon of July 24th, I took my son to the park. He was on his own when it came to enjoying the sliding board, but he needed my assistance on the swings. I could feel more intense pain as I pushed him, so after a while, I suggested to my son that we should go home.

When I picked him up to put him in his car seat....OUCH! it felt like someone had stabbed me with a very sharp knife. My entire leg was in pain. We got home and I took a hot shower. Bad move.

I got out of the shower and managed to get dressed, but as I walked down the hall to the kitchen, I hit the floor. I was consumed with pain. I couldn't move and my 2 1/2 year old son was scared as he saw his old man lying on the floor screaming in pain.

30 minutes later, I somehow managed to crawl to the bedroom and upon finally managing to get on the bed, I realized that I couldn't reach the phone. For 15 minutes, I tried to get my son to fetch my cell phone which I had left on a countertop in the kitchen.

Finally, he found it and brought it to me. He stayed by my side, despite being scared, while I called for help. I actually was on the phone with my wife and I said, "I've fallen and I can't get up!"

In the end, it turns out I had pinched my sciatic nerve. Ouch! I aggravated my condition when I fell outside my doctor's office the next morning. I fell and bruised my leg just under my knee. Man, that really tingled.

Today, my back and hip seem a lot better, but the nerves in my knee and shin are really acting up. My doctor says there's not much I can do except take it easy and let my body heal.

After being on my back and restricted to bed rest for 9 days, I can honestly tell you that I don't ever want to be in this situation again. I've had to put everything and I mean everything on hold while I've recovered and it's going to be a while before I'm back to 100%.

My advice to you after this experience....Exercise, eat healthy, get plenty of rest and find a good chiropractor.

I'm getting asked the same thing over and over, but I'm still not at liberty to disclose the full details of this project.

It Was A Sickening Feeling, But I Got Over It Quickly

Yuck!, I got SICK the other day. After being told that we were going to be able to finance this project without any problems, we were told that we'd have to start over from scratch. Somewhere along the way, somebody was either confused, spoke without consulting their superiors or bit of more than they could chew.

To make a long story short, the rugged got pulled out from under me by a financial institution. It was enough to make me SICK, but who's got time to be sick. I've got a whole list of bankers to call. I hope this time around, they'll actually read my business plan.

Independence Day

Yesterday while celebrating the 4th of July with friends, I made a brief phone call to the one guy who can either make this deal happen or go away. The call was short, sweet and to the point. (After all, it was a hoilday.)The end result was a positive one and we have agreed to move forward on this business transaction. When this deal is complete, then I will be able to celebrate my own Independence Day....or will I?

As, I've made my rounds around the internet, I've realized that my blog is getting a lot of attention lately. I've seen references to this site on other sites.

Mostly, the attention is coming from other folks in the media. I've been touched by the kind words that so many have written. There have been so many e-mails and phone calls of support. It really means a lot to me.

Having said that, let me say this..."I think we can do this!" After discussing my business endeavor with a financier, I heard those words today. I wanted to hear those words. Now, let's see what happens next.

One Step Closer

Two days ago, I shared my completed business plan with a trusted family friend. This gentleman is a very successful businessman and we spent three hours together going over the strengths and weaknesses of this business opportunity.

Today, I got one step closer as I moved into another round of negotiations with the current owners of this endeavor. Things went very well today and sometime next week, I enter the financing phase of this deal.

How do we structure this deal to benefit everyone? Can we even pull this off? I'm confident that we can, we've done our homework and we've put together a good deal. Honestly, the biggest task that lies ahead for me is prayer. I'm seeking God's guidance on this one. This could be life-changing.

So please, keep me in your prayers. I sure do need 'em and some of you could use the practice.

Big Announcement...Not Today!

No news is good news. Actually, there isn't any real news to tell you anyway.

What I'm up to is very speculative. There is an amount or risk involved with completing this deal, but still I'm intrigued by it.

Some of closest friends and advisers are encouraging me to move forward, but with caution. As my grandpa used to say, "Don't put your cart before the horse." Regardless, when I am in a position to reveal the nature of this endeavor....I will.

I once thought that making a decision of this magnitude would be cut and dry, but there's more to it than I had expected. How many of you have ever had to sit down and write a business plan?

That's a lot of fun, isn't it? In fact, I should be working on that instead of updating this blog. So rest assured, there will be a Big Announcement, but not Today!

Good Morning Larry!!!

Today I'm in Washington, D.C. staying at The Ritz Carlton. How I ended up here is a long story. Nonetheless, this is good living. You just can't beat the service. Everything you hear about The Ritz Carlton is true. If you ever get the opportunity to spend a day or two at The Ritz,.....Do It!

The first thing we did when we arrived was to get settled in and then we ordered room service. The prices really weren't that expensive, but what the heck, you only live once, right?

Man, you should have seen me parading around my suite in an official Ritz Carlton bath robe. Wow!

Yesterday, while my wife, Barb was in a business conference, my son, Tristan and I went exploring the nation's capital.

We had a blast visiting the White House and the Washington Monument. I will remember to wear more comfortable shoes the next time I tackle a big city on foot. Anyway, we crammed a lot into one afternoon and spending all this time with my son is priceless.

Earlier today, while we were heading out for breakfast, we bumped into Larry King. (Yeah, the guy with the suspenders on CNN.) I was surprised to see him there in the lobby of my hotel, but then I remembered that it was the Ritz Carlton.

I guess Larry hangs out there quite a bit. He was kicked back on a sofa and carrying on a serious conversation with a couple of gentlemen. In passing, I said "Good morning, Larry" and good ol' Larry King replied, "Good morning"....and that was all there was to it. I just kept walking and Larry kept talking.

Now that I think about it, I don't think Larry King has ever seen me on TV.

You've Gotta Go To Hershey Park

If you've never visited Hershey, Pennsylvania then you've really missed something. We're staying at The Hershey Lodge and the folks are real hospitable. I was a little worried about my son, Tristan being loud, but every once in a while, I heard another kid down the hall making just as much noise.

This is truly a family vacation destination. Hershey Park has a lot of rollercoasters, but I didn't ride any of them. Oh well, my son is just 2 1/2 so it was nothing but kiddie rides. I guess we'll just have to come back.

Honestly, if you've never been to Hershey, you really deserve to come check it out. We spent two days in the park and we never even got to play in the waterpark. It's the most awesome waterpark that I have ever seen.

Well, I have another chocolate bar to eat. There is candy everywhere in this town. I can't resist the temptation. I must have more chocolate.

It's two thumbs up for Hershey, PA....The Great American Chocolate Town.

Hey, Aren't You....?

Yesterday, I was recognized by a woman who used to listen to my radio show. Big deal, right? Wait a second, I was meeting my wife, Barb and my son, Tristan for dinner when this woman from Myrtle Beach comes up to me outside of the restaurant and says, "Excuse me, aren't you Banana Jack?" So what, right? Well, it startled me because I was in Pittsburgh, PA.

I don't expect to get recognized that far from home, but it happened....not once, but THREE times. (For the record, my son took part in a model and talent search held in Pittsburgh and it turns out there were other kids from the Carolinas present.)

Earlier today, another woman from Florence, SC, who was there with her grandkids grabbed my arm as I walked by and said, "Aren't you the River Talk guy? It is you. I like that show. You know, it's informative."

Later in the day, as we were packing our suitcases in the trunk of the car so we could travel to Hershey, PA, a gentleman asked me, "Hey, is all this going to be on your tv show? Am I going to be on television? Are you working up here now?"

No, I'm not working. I'm on vacation. Tomorrow the family invades Hershey Park. I wonder if I'll be hearing, "Hey, aren't you....?"
